Phenyo Nonqane, the leader of the PTI team, has a proven work experience accumulated over a period of 15 years in the non-governmental sector, the public service and business.
He has worked for a non-governmental organization called Trust for Christian Outreach and Education for a period of two years. He worked as a Community Development Worker responsible for the development of micro-economic enterprises.
In 1997 he joined the Eastern Cape Provincial Secretariat for Safety and Security as an Assistant Director of Communications.
He was responsible for communications of the Secretariat and during this period he achieved the following: Formulated and implemented a provincial safety and security communications strategy; Formulated and implemented a communication strategy for the National Crime Prevention Strategy focusing on the Eastern Cape Province; Conduct a communications audit focusing on how the South African Policy Service communicated with citizens; Participated in international study tour focusing on communication and policing; Has been trained on community policing and other aspects related to safety and security.
In 1999 he joined the National Department of Labour as a Deputy Director responsible for media liaison. He was seconded to the office of the Minister of Labour as a spokesperson. The work entailed understanding the labour market transformation process and the labour laws.
He established an effective network of media contacts; he implemented a number of publicity campaigns focusing on the labour market transformation and enforcement of labour laws. He spent seven months in 2001 working for the South African National Literacy Initiative as the National Marketing Manager. The project fell under the Ministry of Education.
In September 2001 he joined the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality as the General Manager: Marketing. For five years and four months he was responsible for marketing the City of Tshwane as a tourist destination. He has represented the City of Tshwane at the World Travel Market in London; the ITB in Berlin; the Tourism Indaba in Durban and many other international and domestic tourism marketing platforms.
Nonqane has a solid experience in tourism marketing, public relations and as a tourism and travel freelance journalist. Nonqane has a Master of Philosophy degree in South African Politics and Political Economy from UPE, a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Journalism from Rhodes University; ABET Trainer diploma from UNISA and a management certificate from Wits Business School.
